two albums two artists
Pharoahe Monch - Desire
Asheru - Insomnia Vol. 1
Artist: Pharoahe Monch
Album: Desire
Desire is the second.. wait this is only the second studio album this guy's put out? Pharoahe Monch is a fairly well known rapper, as far as I know. The first work he did was with Prince Po as Organized Konfusion. He put out Internal Affairs in 1999 with the single Simon Says, and though I have yet to listen to all the songs on that album, there's a very apparent difference in style between that and his second album, Desire. I read an interview he did where he talked about the "soulful" feel of Desire, which is very apparent just from the intro track. There's a lot more gospel type singing and the songs talk a lot about freedom (track no. 2 "Free") and struggles to accept yourself (Hold On ft. Erykah Badu) which tells a story of a girl named Diamond who grows up being ridiculed because she's black but ends up accepting that she is beautiful.
Artist: Asheru
Album: Insomnia Vol. 1
You might recognize his voice from the intro to The Boondocks (mondays 11:30 on [adult swim].. check it out)
Just from that one verse in the intro you can tell this guy is deep. His full length album only gets better. He seems to have a similar take on black america, and his song "Niggas" reminds me A LOT of the Boondocks episode "Return of the King" where they play with the idea that MLK Jr. went into a 30 year coma instead of dying and comes back to see his people not having made much progress. He seems to display a love hate relationship. God I feel like I'm typing on touchy ground here but I think both the episode and the song have good messages in the end. Anyways Insomnia Vol. 1 is dope, check it out.
